Car Paint Correction for a Clearer, Deeper Finish

Paint correction is the process of carefully polishing away the fine defects that dull your car's finish. At Thorpe Auto Detail, our team provides paint correction in Campbell, CA for drivers who want their paint to look crisp, clear, and full of depth again. Every service is scheduled by appointment, so your car gets our full attention from the moment it arrives.

How Clear Coat Correction Works

A typical factory paint job has four to six layers, topped by an optically clear coat designed to guard the color from UV exposure and oxidation. Paint correction works only within that clear coat. Using machine polishers, pads, and compounds, we level the surface by a tiny amount so light reflects evenly again. The color layer underneath is never touched, which is why correction takes care and patience.

What Paint Correction Fixes

Over time, everyday driving and washing leave behind swirl marks, light scratches, water spots, and a hazy, oxidized look. These defects sit in the clear coat, the transparent top layer that gives paint its gloss. Under direct sunlight, they scatter light and make even a well-kept car look tired and older than it is. Common causes include automatic car washes, dusty towels, tree sap, hard water from sprinklers, and years of strong California sun.

Realistic Results You Can See

Most swirl marks and light scratches can be greatly reduced or removed. Deeper scratches that have gone through the clear coat may not disappear completely, and we will always tell you what to expect before we begin. Every car is different, so we look closely at each panel under bright lighting before recommending a package. Our goal is a dramatic, visible improvement that keeps your clear coat healthy for years to come.

Keeping Your Corrected Paint Looking Its Best

After a paint correction, the way your car is washed makes a big difference. Most swirl marks come from improper washing, such as dirty sponges, gritty towels, and automatic car washes with brushes. A gentle hand wash with clean microfiber towels goes a long way toward keeping your finish clear. Use a separate towel for wheels, wash from the top down, and dry with a soft, plush microfiber towel instead of a chamois or bath towel.

Paint Sealant Included

Both of our packages finish with a paint sealant, which adds slickness and shine after polishing. It also makes the next few washes easier and gives your freshly corrected paint a crisp, glossy look. For longer-lasting results, many customers choose to follow their correction with a ceramic coating.

Stay on Schedule With Maintenance Detailing

Our maintenance detailing program is an easy way to keep your paint in top shape. We keep a detail history on your car, follow up when your next visit is due, and have a loaner vehicle ready while yours is with us. Regular visits every three, four, or six months keep swirl marks from building back up.

Paint Correction FAQs

  • What is the difference between single- stage and two-stage paint correction?

Single stage correction uses one polishing step and aims for 50 percent or more defect removal, which suits newer cars with light swirl marks. Two-stage correction adds a compounding step before polishing and aims for 75 percent or more, making it a great fit for paint with heavier wear. Not sure which one you need? We are happy to take a look and recommend the right fit.

  • Will paint correction remove every scratch?

Paint correction greatly reduces swirl marks and light scratches, but deep scratches that pass through the clear coat may not fully disappear. We inspect your paint and give you clear expectations before any work begins.

  • Does paint correction thin my clear coat?

Every correction removes a very small amount of clear coat, which is why it should be done by experienced hands. Our team uses the least aggressive approach that delivers the result, so your finish stays healthy.

  • Should I get ceramic coating after paint correction?

It is a great way to lock in the results. Both of our ceramic coating packages include a two-stage paint correction first, so the coating is applied over a clear, refined finish.

  • How long does paint correction take?

Timing depends on your vehicle's size and the level of correction. We will provide an estimate when you book your appointment.

  • Can paint correction help before I sell my car?

A clearer, glossier finish makes a strong first impression on buyers and in listing photos. Many customers book a correction before selling or trading in, and it pairs well with a complete detail.
